Interim managers usually solve tasks, which involve change management, that require a hands-on approach. Change management can be split into two subcategories; companies that are going through a turnaround and those that are experiencing fast growth. In both cases, these companies are in need of experienced resources. However, in most cases, these experienced resources are only necessary for a limited period of time. Therefore, an interim manager is the perfect solution for a company in need of temporary help.

In what situations could one need an interim manager?

Strategic planning is required when a company is set out for a period of change. Situations where an interim manager could leverage change, are for example when a company is experiencing fast growth, a rebranding, venturing into new projects, or even in times of decline and the company requires to undergo a turnaround. An interim manager, unlike a management consultant, will not only lay out a direction, plan, and a strategy, they will also execute their strategies, guiding the business through the transition successfully.

 

What qualities do interim managers have, that allow them to successfully lead a company through change?

 

1.Interim managers take the employees into consideration

Interim managers are aware of the fact that in order for a successful implementation of a strategy, the interim manager needs to have the employees onboard, as well as trust and faith in their temporary leader. Not only does the extensive experience and expertise allow the interim manager to gain trust quickly, but the interim manager will involve the employees in the decision-making process through taking their needs and concerns into consideration. It is crucial for the success of the company, for the employees to know what is expected of them, what is going to happen during and after the change, and this is achieved through communication.

2. Interim managers do not interfere with day-to-day operations

It is common for employees to get overwhelmed when there is a period of change. In order to minimize confusion, or employees becoming concerned, interim managers refrain from interfering with the day-to-day operations of the company. This allows the team to have a sense of familiarly in their work while there is a period of change taking place. Although, it should be noted that if there are some changes within the day to day operations that need to be adjusted, this will be done in small steps.

3. Interim managers are goal and result oriented

Interim managers are team players and are responsible for making sure that the whole team is aligned and focused on the same vision. This is done through setting and communicating goals and deadlines effectively, motivating the employees to work towards the desired result.
